According to Maxim, this social media bikini star had the perfect comeback for Twitter trolls. Which means Maxim is now paying Yahoo bloggers a couple bucks to pen male apologist clickbait. Maxim sold in its heyday for $250 million. A couple years ago it got bought at a fire sale by the Steak n’ Shake guy for around ten and two cough drops he found in his pocket. The new owner named himself Editor in Chief, brought in a 73-year old French photographer to help him re-brand the magazine, and started lurking seedily around the model photo shoots.
It’s sad that men’s magazines had to die. It mirrors the steady suffocation of traditional masculine culture in the society itself. Magazines like Maxim invoke a nostalgia like drive-in theaters or wide mouth beer bottles. You can’t imagine how they came to be slaughtered in the free market. There’s always going to be one guy who brings them back on some small level so that local newspapers can feature him in a feel good story four weeks before he folds. Steak n’ Shake dude has too much money to fold. So more SEO programmed headlines and feature articles on the perfect cufflinks to wear in Cannes for the summer season. Progress is a bitter pill. Swallow it whole. The slow chew is what makes you gag.
