‘Marie Antoinette’ is getting booed

‘Marie Antoinette’, which had been expected to be a strong contender for the Palme d’Or (best picture) at the Cannes Film Festival, was booed yesterday by audiences after its premiere. The movie, starring Kirsten Dunst and directed by Sofia Coppola, chronicles the life of the 14-year-old princess from her arrival in the French court to her impending downfall during the initial days of the French Revolution. The few very early reviews are not kind. Breitbart says:

“…despite sumptuous sets and costumes and a rollicking rock’n’roll soundtrack, the film is a disappointing and unconvincing story that prompted sniggers at points, and boos which drowned out the scattered applause at the end.”

Time Out London says:

“Coppola’s film may give fashion fans and music video heads cause to celebrate, but it will leave anyone looking for a strong perspective on the life of Marie Antoinette severely disappointed.”

Thanks to a weak gag-reflex, it took me 4 hours to read 3 articles about Kirsten Dunst, but I think I got the gist of it: she’s made yet another unwatchable movie that will die at the box office. And Coppola is great, but the movie is described as, “kind of like “The O.C.” set in Versailles”. Which I guess means it’s about how brooding bad boys who are running from their past get chicks. As if I needed a movie to remind me of that, baby.
