After seeing Season of the Witch, it’s hard to believe Nic Cages life could get any more embarrassing, but this weekend he was arrested for domestic violence after getting gold-medal winning drunk and grabbing his wifes arm during an argument in the French Quarter (NOTE: as someone who is from New Orleans, let me assure you that getting arrested in the French Quarter for being drunk is like getting kicked out of Wu Tang for smoking too much weed or kicked off the USC football team for breaking too many rules. You really have to step up and do something special).
“He was running around and screaming in the street,” a witness tells PEOPLE.
Cage, 47, who is filming a movie in the area, was charged with domestic abuse and disturbing the peace after arguing with his wife Alice Kim, according to the New Orleans Police Department.
The couple was fighting over which house they were renting in the French Quarter.
“Apparently he had mistaken the house of my neighbors for the other house up the block that he is actually renting,” (a source who lives in the area) says. “His wife was trying to persuade him from disturbing the elderly couple who do in fact live in that house.”
When cops arrived, Cage started to get into the back passenger-side door of the police car.
“But the cop got out, walked around, and Cage ran a block south toward the river, where he tried to get into a cab. There was a woman outside with a baby in her arms shouting, ‘Please don’t hurt us.’ ”
Cage, who was arrested after a police officer ordered him out of the cab, seemed to be intoxicated, according to an inmate, who says he was in the holding area of the jail with the actor.
“He was drunk,” the inmate says, adding that Cage spent the evening chatting with sheriff’s deputies. “He wasn’t in a cell. He was behind the counter with all the other officers.”
After being bailed out by Dog the Bounty Hunter, Cage is due in court to face the charges on May 31.
TMZ says Cage grabbed his wifes arm during the argument about their address and tried to pull her inside what he thought was their apartment, and that’s what lead to the domestic violence charge. He was also apparently daring the police to arrest him. Which they promptly did. I assume that’s the only reason he was. From what I can tell when you get arrested in New Orleans, there’s only one box on the form for race, and it’s “black”.
