The San Diego Gay Men’s Chorus got fucked over at the Padres game over the weekend when the dude in the booth played a pre-recorded National Anthem over the Chorus assembled on the outfield grass to sing their hearts out. The Chorus leader implied that the slight was not only intentional, but that playing the canned female version of the Anthem was an obvious insult to their Gay Men’s Chorus masculinity.
What should have been a night of joy and celebration at Petco Park last night, instead turned into a nightmare raising serious questions about homophobia within the San Diego Padres organization and its relationship with the LGBT community.
The Chorus noted how nobody noticed the playback mistake and alerted somebody to turn off the taped Anthem. Stadium staff played it in full and then escorted the unsung Gay Men’s Chorus off the field, to what they claim were derogatory comments by many in the stands. The Padres apologized profusely, adamantly insisting it was an honest mistake, then fired or punished every single person possibly involved because you just fucked over the Gay Men’s Chorus on Gay Pride day at the ball yard.
It is hard to explain how nobody in charge noticed that the thirty gay dudes on the field weren’t singing. You have to think if it were Garth Brooks standing out behind second base at the microphone there would’ve been a record needle scratch followed by an apology and a restart for Brooks. Expect an inordinate number of male on male Kiss Cams for the remainder of the season. For when last place just isn’t enough anymore.
