Snoop Dogg isn’t high on the reboot of the Roots miniseries because he’s sick of slavery being the backdrop of so much black themed filmed entertainment. Snoop sniffs a whitey conspiracy in the propagation of content designed to remind the black community of their history of subjugation, versus highlighting their modern day accomplishments.
“I’m sick of this shit. How the fuck are they going to put Roots on, on Memorial Day? They going to just to keep beating that shit into our heads about how they did us, huh?” Let’s create our own shit based on today, how we live and how we inspire people today. Black is what’s real. Fuck that old shit.
It’s a fair criticism. The need to re-boot Roots seems flimsy outside of the massive cable ratings it’s bringing the A&E/Lifetime Network which surely must have some more Joanna Kerns in peril movies to make.
It’s hard to discount a rapper who swears yet speaks in complete sentences. You just figure they have to know something. Though Snoop obviously excludes his own multibillion dollar medium and industry from his rant about black entertainment being subject to Uncle Tom’s programming directives. Hip hop culture dominates the music and consumer brand space. The Snoopmarket sells a ton of slippers and sunglasses and presumably weed if you know the password.
Slavery was a massive eyesore on the history of America. Like Zubaz pants, but it went on much longer. It’s going to be a big part of the network that runs the History Channel. The last fifteen hundred Jewish documentaries have been about the Holocaust. You can’t run from atrocities all that easily. More Basketball Wives wouldn’t kill us.
