It’s already a punishment enough when you live in Florida with the exception of a few parts. “Florida man” news stories are never anything to be proud of. It’s sad to see a state once celebrated for Walt Disney World, delicious oranges, and well behaved pet gators is now more known for golf cart chop shops, drug induced cannibalism, and school shootings. Imagine almost taking a shower in bullets from semi-automatic gunfire before 4th period only to have almost half of the nation write off the incident as fake news. The students belonging to #neveragain will never attend an Oscars because they aren’t crisis actors and won’t let Hollywood water down their cause. There isn’t an award to be won when 17 people in Parkland lost their lives. I know if I almost died at the hands of the awkward kid in class who never got laid I would want to sit as close as possible to Olivia Munn for consolation. All of these kids deserve a round of applause for their unwavering willpower.
Emma Gonzalez, Jaclyn Corin, Alex Wing, Cameron Kasky and David & Lauren Hogg didn’t get an invite to Sunday’s big event … for good reason. People organizing the student marches tell us the kids would likely have turned down invitations to the Academy Awards … it’s just not the time or place given the importance of the movement.
Celebrities like George Clooney have already started movements like March For Our Lives where gun control is the focus. I’m not siding for or against the movement but I feel maybe, just maybe, if everyone in America lost the “not my problem” attitude it would be possible to catch that weird kid in every school before he ruins 17 lives. Because who really wants to become just like the British. With guns gone lunatics will just find other ways to hurt people. I’d rather take my chances being shot at by someone with terrible aim than acid to the face. Or being shanked until a colostomy bag is my personal permanent fashion accessory.
