Ocean’s was an alright franchise but what the world needed more of was the exact same thing except with women. Why just ruin Ghostbusters when you can ruin other remakes that fall into the misfortune of being green-lit by Hollywood greed. Who asked for this equal opportunity hand-me-down movie? The eight women cast to play in the movie are all names to grab attention. If a female Asian-American rapper named Awkwafina starring next Sandra Bullock doesn’t give off the scent of casting struggle I don’t know what does. It’s probably because the people responsible for this movie couldn’t find eight A-list females dumb enough to fill the positions. Just imagine Jennifer Lawrence attaching her name to what could easily be confused as a parody film at first glance.
The Ocean’s 11 spin-off stars Sandra Bullock as Debbie Ocean (the estranged sister of George Clooney’s Danny Ocean), who assembles a team to pull of a daring heist at the New York Met Gala.
That team just happens to be made up of some of the biggest female stars in Hollywood today, featuring the likes of Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway, Mindy Kaling, Sarah Paulson, Rihanna, Awkwafina and Helena Bonham Carter.
While we still don’t know much about the details of the film, earlier this month Bullock shared a little about her character Debbie, including the fact that by the time we meet her in Ocean‘s 8, she’s been incarcerated for five years.
I’m not buying a ticket to see this when 2018 rolls around. There are better ways of making the world pay attention to eight women on camera than to have them reenact the Girl Scout’s version of a heist. I can almost guarantee if they make a sequel to this film it will be entitled Ocean’s MeToo. Empowering women by emulating “man movies.” If the world is heading in the direction of Hollywood women behaving like Hollywood men I wouldn’t mind being sexually harassed by Cate Blanchett. She was pretty bangable being down on her luck in Blue Jasmine.
