After about your seventeenth published suicide video, he will come to you. Dr. Phil’s like Candyman, only he offers reasonably lucrative paid appearance contracts. Also, you can spin pretty much any story you like provided you weep and accept his counsel in the end.
Nobody bit on Sinead O’Connor’s Jersey Red Roof Inn goodbye speech, so she turned to Dr. Phil to provide a relatively more authentic forum for framing her cry for help. Jersey motels offer a solid aura of desperation, but nothing compares to receiving tough love pronouncements from the sweaty drawling mustache.
Dr. Phil claims O’Connor reached out to him so she could be on his show and help other musicians like herself struggling with mental illness. In the preview for the to-be-aired interview, O’Connor claims her mother badly physically and sexually abused her as a child.
“She ran a torture chamber. She was a person who took delight in hurting you.”
This is a claim O’Connor has made previously in her self-published video monologues. It may be true. It may not. Her mother died in a car crash thirty plus years ago. Given O’Connor’s mental state and the hereditary factor, it’s quite possible her mom was also heavily messed up. Though this connection would certainly work against O’Connor in her attempts to regain custody, or even unsupervised visitation with her still minor children. Her adult children have already distanced themselves from her.
Dr. Phil has taken heat before for exploiting mentally ill famous people looking nuts on his cameras. Last Fall he allowed Shelly Duvall to babble incoherently in a sit-down interview which makes little sense with somebody so removed from reality. Mental health advocated slammed Dr. Phil. He smiled and twirled his mustache and asked his assistant to check the ratings.
After O’Connor declares Sinead O’Connor to be figuratively dead, she performs ‘Nothing Compares 2 U’ for the segment. Super impromptu. A solid chance to remind yourself that Prince who wrote the song is dead from overdose while O’Connor continues unabated into years of tearful home videos. Who’s the crazy one now? Just kidding. It’s still O’Connor.
