Fresh off dignifying her art as Rita Repulsa in Power Rangers, Elizabeth Banks called out Steven Spielberg for never directing a film with a female lead. In Banks’ defense, she was at one of the weekly Hollywood award shows and symposiums for women to celebrate women. And by celebrate, obviously, bitch about men.
“I went to Indiana Jones and Jaws and every movie Steven Spielberg ever made, and by the way, he’s never made a movie with a female lead. Sorry, Steven. I don’t mean to call your ass out, but it’s true.”
The quintessential rich white woman in Hollywood statement. Assertive, the obligatory foul word to prove passion, and completely inaccurate. Shari Belafonte, who was at the event, tried to remind Banks in regard to The Color Purple, but Banks would have none of it and dismissed her correction.
The Color Purple wasn’t merely a female led film, it was led by Oprah and Whoopi Goldberg, not exactly supermodels turning a promotional trick in a film. That took some young Spielberg courage to undertake from a financial standpoint.
Banks later apologized for her ill-informed charge. On social media naturally. She took full responsibility for her mistake, without explaining what that responsibility might entail. Meaning, she’ll be at the next event doing essentially the same without hesitation.
“When I made the comments, I was thinking of recent films Steven directed. It was not my intention to dismiss the import of the iconic #TheColorPurple. I made things worse by giving the impression that I was dismissing Shari Belafonte when she attempted to correct me. I spoke with Shari backstage and she was kind enough to forgive me. Those who have the privilege and honor of directing and producing films should be held to account for our mistakes, whether it’s about diversity or inaccurate statements. I’m very sorry.”
By recent films she means Jaws and Indiana Jones, the two she mentioned. She’s seems largely full of shit. Or merely unaware of Spielberg’s IMDb credits. Which would be fine if you didn’t use him as an cheap example to create a feminist slogan to throw out at a luncheon.
This is a time and place when accuracy of information is not only subordinated to social cause bandwagons, it’s completely irrelevant. If she hadn’t invoked the name Spielberg, her errant accusation likely would never have been challenged. Applaud and pretend there’s no wrong way to get what you want. It’s an honor simply to be nominated.
