Katy Perry, Migos Fake News Victims

Katy Perry’s ultra-progressive appearances with hip-hop group Migos and a gaggle of drag queens on SNL was marred by rumors that Migos refused to perform with the queens. Not as comfortable as Perry with exploiting a marginalized group to buttress a waning career. Perry continued to perform with Migos despite their alleged bigotry. The incident, which has ended up being labeled as grade-A fake news, was supported with comments like:

I work at SNL and the rumors are true! Migos held up rehearsal because they ‘weren’t comfortable with the drag queens’ being there. There were initially more drag queens on the set [for ‘Bon Appetit], but after Migos threw a fit, Katy Perry’s team removed some of the queens from the performance. Additionally, Katy Perry didn’t invite any of the queens to the afterparty… So, none of them were allowed in.

and 

I was one of the performers on that table with them the whole time, during the rehearsal for three days. On the day of the filming, when I got there, I was told to leave. I wasn’t on the set at the time, but we were asking what happened. They said it was because Migos doesn’t feel comfortable with having drag queens there.

The concoction of possible homophobia from self-described ally (and Human Rights Campaign award recipient) Perry, Migos’ previous anti-gay comments against openly gay singer Makonnen (“This world is not right“), and the high-profile SNL stage led to a viral story that questions the ethics of all parties involved. Gays turned on Perry. The likely still homophobic members of Migos were glad they came out of it still appealing to their equally gay-hating hip-hop fans. But the controversy is now allegedly fabricated. According to a drag queen present at the performance: 

Don’t believe everything you read … Some people may be haters, but don’t let that negate the fact that we did something so incredibly important on one of the largest television networks!

With another adding that she’s been:

…contacted by many reporters asking questions that perpetuate negativity based in falsehood.

These allegations of fake news could be fake news. But there’s truth in fake news like there’s truth in alcohol. We cement what we suspect. A trio of hip-hop singers hating gay people. Unique. A pop star selling out for money and exposure. Let’s watch Lady Gaga sip on her Pepsi in her Airbnb. Believe anything you read. If enough people trust fake news, it’s real news. We can’t reboot the Internet. So just feast on whatever garbage supports your views. That way we all win.
