A wave of anti-semitism overcame Emmy Rossum on Twitter. She claimed it came from Trump supporters in response to her pro-Hillary comments. When pressed on the specifics, Rossum produced one Tweet from some asshole that included a doctored photo of a Nazi concentration camp and all the key Holocaust terminology packed into one sentence. It’s abhorrent. Also statistically entirely irrelevant. Nobody knows how Twitter works. Or cares to know. Everything rounds down to zero against 200 billion Tweets a year.
Anti-semitism is alive in real places like France where radical Muslims killing Jewish grocers is viewed as a wash. Or among Black Lives Matters organizations which routinely apprend “The Jews” as perpetrators of their oppression. On Twitter, an asshole looking up somebody’s ethnic background on Wikipedia and launching a concentration camp joust is another straw in the thicket of anonymous trolling. Ten times as many dudes probably insisted they were going to fuck her up the ass. Another twenty that she is part of a Free Mason illuminati and they’re going to fuck Curt Schilling’s daughter up the ass. Anytime somebody mentions being the recipient of hateful messages, ask them to show you the worst twenty. Imagine the vile taunts the Kardashians receive daily on their feeds. And they limit their chats to cosmetics and hair.
New York magazine’s Jesse Singal wrote an actual piece of journalism on the reported anti-semitism on Twitter aimed at pro-Hillary reporters during the final months of the campaign. It became popular for news outlets to highlight this phenomenon as it fit their political agenda. Singal found that the measure of ‘anti-semitic Tweets’ noted in the reports were vastly overinflated and incorrectly measured by basis of how Twitter content manifests in feeds. It turns out that a relatively tiny number of people cranking out anonymous hate Tweets account for these “sweeping phenomena”. Anti-semitism, racism, and hate speech on social media is relegated to a minute segment of losers, over-emphasized as a trend because that makes for cheap headlines.
Thanks for helping with this big divide thing.
