Known for consistently making the wrong decisions at the wrong times yet still taking home a $34 million annual paycheck, Roger Goodell finally issued a vanilla statement on the controversy surrounding NFL players taking a knee during the National Anthem. Goodell worked in a room with politically sensitive elves to conceive the least controversial, most generalized statement of Pablum since the last time Hillary Clinton spoke about anything:
I truly respect our players wanting to speak out and change their community. We don’t live in a perfect society. We want them to use their voice. And they’re moving from protest to progress and trying to make things happen in communities. I think where they’re moving and how they’re moving there is very productive and we’re going to encourage that.
That clears things up. Goodell noted he’s yet been able to speak to Colin Kaepernick who started the craze of multi-millionaire ballplayers doing the least bit possible to heal racial injustices in this nation. So, he hasn’t tried. Kaerpernick’s a second string QB. They take Commissioner’s calls.
Three more Miami Dolphin players this weekend took a knee prompting Dolphin fans in attendance to exclaim, great, even better than that would’ve been a win. Or maybe the kneel and a win. That way we all get what we came here for.
It’s going to take many years before the NFL willingly concedes that the National Anthem played before games is a completely arbitrary tradition remaining solely out of inertia and fright. Also, U.S. Armed Forces big dollar sponsorships. Players will likely never get tired of trying to tie their social standing to the appearance of activism. It’s simply too easy to do.
Look for The Commish to get back involved when somebody tries to use their sneakers to raise money for cancer research. Bring down the weight of his office and all.
