Justin Timberlake is in Paris today (with Cameron Diaz, incidentally) to promote his second album, ‘FutureSex/LoveSounds’, set to be released on September 11. Timberlake said:
“I realize that I have a platform to push the sound of pop music. That’s the only responsibility that I put on myself in recording the album. If I’m not going to push it, then who’s going to push it?”
He said the new sound was the product of a number of wide ranging influences, from Al Green and Marvin Gaye to The Beatles and The Eagles. About the first single ‘SexyBack’, Timberlake said:
“The best way I can describe that song is say David Bowie and David Byrne decided to do a cover of James Brown’s Sex Machine.”
Yeah, thanks Justin. That description really brought it home for me. Look, I’m sure Peek-a-Boo Jackson or whoever it is you just said is the heart and soul of this record, but I was -50 when those people were popular, and unless I slip into a time machine tonight, I have no intention of ever listening to them, so stop god damn confusing me with your history lesson and go make a video with a bunch of hot chicks with big tits.
If you haven’t heard the first track yet, you can hear ‘SexyBack’ here.
