Everyone saw ‘the Da Vinci Code’

‘The Da Vinci Code’ grossed 77 million domestically and 147 million internationally for a total of 224 million in its opening weekend. Despite its controversial subject matter and almost universally negative reviews, ‘Code’ had the second largest worldwide debut ever. And it was a good weekend overall for movies, with second place finisher ‘Over the Hedge’ making 37.2 million domestically. Compare that to ‘MI3’ in first place last week after making just 24.5 million. A source said:

“‘Da Vinci’ opening this big just tells you that people do want to go to the movies, they just need the right movie to go.”

You really have to work to label a Tom Hanks and Ron Howard movie as controversial. Together they’re slightly less edgy than Shari Lewis and Lamb Chop, and maybe one spot above Don Ho. To be fair, Shari Lewis did have some provocative stuff on the Final Solution and a riff called “black bucks do it better”. Many at the time found it inappropriate.
