Boxingtalk.com was the first to report last night that light heavyweight king Antonio Tarver is in the final stages of negotiations to play the nemesis in the upcoming Rocky 6. Sylvester Stallone – who was born in 1946 – will step back into the ring as Rocky Balboa and Tarver will play Mason Dixon. Rocky 6 begins filming in the next few months.
Mason Dixon’s nickname in this is “the Line”. And that entire last sentence just gives me a headache. Based on what I learn by the Boondocks calling me the devil, the Civil War period doesn’t have a lot of sentimental value for black people in this country. So I find it unlikely that Mr. and Mrs. Dixon would name their son Mason. Couple that with the fact that Antonio Tarver hits people like he’s got a horseshoe in his glove, and you have to wonder if Stallone knows what he’s doing. In case you’re not a boxing fan, in picture 4 is one of the best fighters of all time, hitting the mat like he just got kicked by a donkey. I don’t care how indomitable his human spirit is this time, unless Rocky has telepathy now, he’s pretty much screwed.
(And yes, I know technically that the Mason-Dixon line is the border between Maryland and Pennsylvania, but that’s not how its commonly remembered, so calm down Professor.)
